The End of PFAS? Gradiant Takes On US Utilities

Gradiant's on-site reactors permanently destroy PFAS in municipal water, giving US utilities a path beyond filtration stopgaps

Federal regulators gave US water utilities a deadline, not a suggestion. Across the Midwest, that distinction is now driving real spending. Gradiant has signed commercial contracts with municipal water authorities to deploy its on-site PFAS destruction systems, targeting the class of compounds regulators have classified as an urgent public health threat.

What separates this approach from older methods is permanence. Conventional filtration captures PFAS and stores it elsewhere, shifting the problem rather than solving it. Gradiant's reactors break down the chemical bonds directly at the treatment facility, eliminating over 99 percent of target contaminants without requiring major power upgrades or facility overhauls. Cities report the compact units connect into existing infrastructure, sparing utilities from costly reconstruction.

Smaller districts face the steepest climb. Limited public budgets make capital-intensive upgrades difficult to justify upfront, and analysts caution that maintenance costs may vary when systems process more complex wastewater. Those are real constraints, not theoretical ones.

Early field data, though, is difficult to argue with. Performance numbers from initial deployments are validating the technology's design claims, giving water boards solid ground to build a regulatory case. For utilities trying to demonstrate compliance without rebuilding everything from scratch, that matters considerably.

Clean tap water rarely makes headlines until something goes wrong. Gradiant is betting that utilities will act before that happens, and so far, some of them are.
